ABOUT ME:Nokwanda Themba is a 27 year old (b.1994) academic, public health professional, contemporary Illustrator and creative entrepreneur. She holds a Bachelors of Science degree in Human Physiology as well as a Postgraduate degree in Public Health from the University of Pretoria. Currently, she is pursuing her Masters in Public Health (MPH) in Epidemiology & Biostatistics at the University of Cape Town. Her work focuses on the Visual Anthropology of beauty, serving as social advocacy for movements such as womanism and feminism. Her work is concerned with the social and cultural identity and representation of Women of Color from different global ethnicities. Her work has been described as "whimsical, vibrant and imaginative illustrations creating nuanced reflections of the black female form, embracing all aspects of femininity — both her own, and that of her subjects"-Design Indaba. She describes her work as a social experiment, in which she explores the complexities and individual differences in the faces she meets. Some might consider her work far removed from her background in medicine and science. Carving a multi-career while pursuing her studies, she has exhibited her work in group exhibitions and worked with galleries such as Trent Gallery in the 'Print Art Exhibition'-2018. In 2015 she was chosen to be a part of ULTRACONTEMPORARY #EMERGENCYARTAFRICA hosted by Copenhagen Ultracontemporary Biennale (CUB) at The Museum of African Design where she worked alongside artists from Denmark, Berlin in a group exhibition. Her work has featured in with publications such as Elle South Africa, Napizum in the United States and POVO Journal's 10th Anniversary Edition in Zimbabwe. In 2017 she was Voted as the Top 16 Emerging Creative Leaders to look out for and has been invited as a guest speaker at the Young African Creatives Conference panel discussion hosted by Creative Nestling to discuss the future of the creative industry. She has over the years appeared in many online features celebrating her self taught talent such as Design Indaba, SA Creative Network, Elle Magazine SA, Between 10 and 5, Accra dot alt and Afriquette. She has since collaborated with artists across the United States, Ghana, Japan and her work continues to catch the eye of many studios, residencies, organizations and galleries across the world. Her work can be found in the ‘Women who draw- worldwide open directory for female illustrators as well as children's books and most recently, Rebel Girls Good Night Stories: 100 Real-Life Tales of Black Girl Magic! |
